MATSUURA City is located on the KITA-MATSUURA Peninsula, the north part of NAGASAKI Prefecture.The old MATSUURA City and two islands floating on IMARI Bay, FUKUSHIMA-Cho and TAKASHIMA-Cho, have annexed in 2006.The east side of city is facing IMARI City, SAGA Prefecture, and the west side of city is facing HIRADO City.And the city is located at the distance about 100Km from NAGASAKI Airport and FUKUOKA Airport, and it takes less than 2 hours by car to get the city.MATSUURA City is one of the best fishery towns in Japan as well as an agricultural town where a variety of vegetables and fruits are grown.

MATSUURA was firstly noted as [MATSURA (MATSUURA)] on the history book, “Gishi-Wajinden” (the Record of Japan in the History of Wei) written in late 3rd century and it was an important route connecting Asian Continent and Japan since ancient times.The area of sea peoples who lived by catching the fruits of the sea on the sea side and taking continental culture was used to be the ISE Shrine’s territory used as the location to pay tribute to the God.A samurai warrior group called [MATSURA Party] was organized in this MATSUURA before long.They governed the area from KARATSU, IMARI, up to SASEBO, TOHI, IKI and GOTO-Islands, and prospered for about 500 years by commerce with Asian Continent.The city prospered by coral industry between MEIJI Period and Postwar Period but all coral mines were closed due to energy revolution since 1960’s, and the city is aiming to keep industrial foundation by constructing thermal power generation plant in addition to fishery industry continuing since pre-War Period.

MATSUURA City is famous for GENKO (Mongol invasion attempts against Japan). Yuan Dynasty (Mongolian Empire) surged ahead Japan two times, “Bunei War” in 1274 and “Koan War” 1281 in the 13th century to invade Japan. Still the battle site remains clearly.And [HONNAMON Experience (Real One Experience)] which has started from the concept of the real life experience for tourists in farming villages and fishery villages now becomes the main attraction of MATSUURA City sightseeing which accepts 30,000 people a year.
