この龍面庵は、１２８１年弘安の役で鎮西奉行少弐経資の弟、景資が本陣を構えたところと伝えられています。運命の日、旧暦７月３０日の大暴風雨により鷹島南岸に停泊していた元軍の船団はことごとく海の中に消え、残敵５，０００人余りが鷹島に上陸したとの急報に博多から駆けつけ、約一週間にわたる戦いの末、敵兵を全滅させたのです。境内にはこの戦いで亡くなった多くの人々の供養塔があり、その中に景資に従って戦死した壱岐の石田五郎為治、西牟田弥五郎の墓があります。
